What can I say? I’m living the dream. I get to do what I love, which is make. I have a studio space at home but my main space is at Cedar Farm where I have a gallery shop downstairs and a working studio upstairs. Its a brilliant community full of artist studios and I feel so blessed to be a part of it daily. I work in porcelain or white stoneware clay for my functional ware and a heavily grogged clay for my sculptural work. My thrown work is largely pure function, and my sculptural work is pure joy.
Sculpturally Functional
These are the pieces I consider sculpturally functional. They are made by hand without using the potters wheel and are made with minimal tools. Mix and match, let loose and enjoy. All pieces are made out of white stoneware and are dishwasher safe, microwaveable and oven proof. I recommend heating the oven up with your ware and not putting it into a preheated oven.
Sculptural
Sculpture. Just because and for the pure joy of it. Makers need to make after all. These sorts of projects give me a… raison d’etre. I adore the challenge, the architecture, the hours and the commitment. The inspiration is from the natural world with years of foraging along the coast. I always marvel at the variety of objects you see washed ashore and how mother nature changes everything into beauty given enough time.
Functional
Pure function. My wheel thrown work is always made in small batches. These are hard working pieces that are designed to be used daily and include tableware, vases and lamp bases. Design and function are always considered. I also work closely with Michelin starred chefs to create bespoke tableware, crafted to their unique specifications and enhancing the presentation of their dishes. I find this work rewarding as it combines my love of sculpture into functional ware.
